Ingredients

  • 4 cups cut green beans fresh, frozen or canned
  • 1 can cream of mushroom soup 10.5 oz
  • 0.5 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon soy sauce or tamari for gluten-free
  • 0.25 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1.33 cups French’s crispy fried onions divided
  • 1 cup shredded cheddar cheese optional

Equipment

  • 9x13-inch baking dish
  • Large bowl

Method

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F. If using fresh green beans, boil them for 5 minutes until tender-crisp. Drain well. If frozen, thaw and pat dry. Canned beans should be drained.
  2. In a large bowl, combine the cream of mushroom soup, milk, soy sauce, and black pepper. Mix until smooth.
  3. Stir in the green beans and 2/3 cup of the fried onions. Mix well to coat everything evenly.
  4. Transfer the mixture to a greased 9x13-inch baking dish. Bake uncovered for 25 minutes.
  5. Sprinkle the remaining onions and cheese over the top. Bake for another 5 minutes until golden and crispy. Let rest for 5 minutes before serving.

Notes

For best results, pat green beans dry to avoid a watery casserole. Add onions at the end to keep them crunchy.
